Coming Attractions: Dodge City Days
With the lockdowns and COVID regulations preventing overseas travel for a while, and note being able at the moment to make it overseas, I decided to check out some places of interest near where I live (in the Kansas City area). I get emails from travek websites that recommend trips, and one of them listed interesting small towns in the Midwest. One of them was Dodge City, Kansas, famous for the Earps, cattle drives and Hollywood make believe. At the end of July, I took a weekend trip out to see what it was all about, and what follows will be a multi-part photo essay detailing my stay there. This will be the first paid essay I am producing, though part of the first installment will be free to subscribers.
If you happen upon this essay wondering why you should read further, remember that I have a PhD in history and a love of the past, so I am going to go into a bit more detail about the historical parts of my than most travel writing, as well commenting upon what Dodge City says about American life in this year of our Lord 2022. (If you are looking for a comp for my writing, think Chris Arnade with a PhD in history rather than science, but with less photographic ability.)
I have a full load this semester, so I cannot promise when they will appear. I hope you understand. In any case, look for the first installment in a few days, and continuing irregularly until I have completed my retrospective journey.
